Ashwagandha
plant is known scientifically as Withania somnifera and also as Indian
ginseng and winter cherry. The word Ashwagandha means “smell of the
stallion” for the plant’s natural odour, while Somnifera means
“sleep-inducing.” In various research conducted by doctors, it has been
proved that Ashwagandha increases insulin secretion and improved
insulin sensitivity in muscle cells. In another research conducted with
patients with type 2 diabetes, supplementing with Ashwagandha for 30
days lowered fasting blood sugar levels as effectively as an oral
diabetes medication.
Brahmi is a
plant that has been frequently used in Ayurvedic medicines since ages.
It is also known by other names such as Bacopa monnieri, Water Hyssop or
Herb of Grace, but Brahmi is the most common name. Brahmi has been
linked to increased blood sugar levels, so depending on your symptoms of
diabetes, it may be able to help improve your hypoglycemia and allows a
patient of diabetes to live a normal, healthy life.
Amla is
known for its immunity-boosting properties and is known to be a great
remedy for diabetes. Amla comprises chromium, a mineral that regulates
carbohydrate metabolism and is said to make the body more responsive to
insulin, further keeping the blood sugar levels in check. Amla's
benefits are attributed to the presence of vitamin C, which is a
powerful antioxidant. A study published in the Archives of Internal
Medicine noted that there is a significant association between vitamin C
levels and diabetes. Amla helps insulin resistance and balances high blood sugar levels. It eliminates toxins from the body and heals cellular metabolism, which makes it great for diabetics.
Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivillianum), is a medicinal plant with
enormous medicinal properties and is celebrated as DhivyaAushad in
Ayurveda. Safedmusli is a native herb found in the understories of
forests in India. Generally SafedMusli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) has
potent antioxidant, anti hyperglycemic and anti diabetic properties that
are very useful for Diabetes Mellitus. If diabetic patient is weak,
thin or underweight, then Safed Musli Powder should be used. The tuber
of SafedMusli has excellent antioxidant potential and is
antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic. The antidiabetic effect
produced by it is more effective in most cases than the drugs like
glibenclamide.
Shatavari, also known as satavari, satavar, or Asparagus racemosus. Sourced from the Asparagus racemosus plant
and available in dietary supplement form, shatavari is said to offer a
variety of health benefits. Shatavari shows promise in the treatment of
diabetic nephropathy (a type of kidney damage thought to result in part
from poor control of diabetes and blood pressure). Results of a study
from 2007 suggest
that shatavarican help to maintain blood sugar levels. Some researchers
believe that the herb specially benefit people with type 2 diabetes.
Over the past decade, Dadim(Punica granatum)
is entitled as a wonder fruit because of its voluminous pharmacological
properties. One key mechanism by which pomegranate fractions affect the
type 2 diabetic condition is by reducing oxidative stress and lipid
peroxidation. This reduction may occur by directly neutralizing the
generated reactive oxygen species, increasing certain antioxidant enzyme
activities, inducing metal chelation activity, reducing resistin
formation, and inhibiting or activating certain transcriptional factors.
Fasting blood glucose levels were decreased significantly by punicic
acid, methanolic seed extract, and pomegranate peel extract. Known
compounds in pomegranate, such as punicalagin and ellagic, gallic,
oleanolic, ursolic, and uallic acids, have been identified as having
anti-diabetic actions.
