Acidity: Home Remedies and Ayurvedic Treatment

Acidity or acid reflux is a very common problem across India. This condition is characterized by heartburn felt around the lower chest area, which is caused by the stomach acid flowing back up into our food pipe. Very few people realize that their unhealthy eating habits and poor lifestyle choices are the main reasons that cause this condition. When out to have fun, at late night parties, during travel or while working hard on deadlines, acidity can be a solid morale and mood killer. Age and gender is no bar! It strikes at the most inappropriate times due to a diverse range of food.

The food we eat passes down the oesophagus into the stomach. The gastric glands in the stomach create acid which is necessary to digest the food and to kill any germs. When acid from the stomach leaks up into the gullet (oesophagus) i.e. excessive secretion of acids by the gastric glands of stomach, the condition is known as acid reflux, commonly called acidity. This condition is characterized by a burning sensation just above the stomach, or right below the breastbone, it can cause heartburns and stomach pain.  This condition is very common in India due to the heavy consumption of oily and spicy foods by Indians.

All of us at some point or the other in our life have suffered from acidity problems. Acidity has many faces and all of them are discomforting. It may come in middle of the night in the form of coughing and choking or perhaps at work as a sudden burning sensation, incessant pain in your chest at office after a huge, greasy meal. In this hectic lifestyle, acidity is the one thing that catches us off guard. It is one thing that all of us have faced regardless of what we do or where we stay.
Some of the foods which needs to be avoided during acidity are Chocolate, Caffeinated drinks or alcohol, Spicy, Fatty, or Fried Foods, Garlic and Onions, Peppermint and tomatoes.

Some of the common Home Remedies to cure Acidity are:

2. Eating an Apple or Banana will help as they act as a buffer for acidity. Fresh fruit
will also make your diet healthier in general and helps with acidity.
3. Aloe Vera juice is another herbal remedy that can help in acidity, because of its soothing properties it cools down the burning sensation.

However, make sure to have these simply boiled and not fried!
